In this blog we examine the question: Can you vacuum seal bread? (along with other popular carbohydrates)
Simply put – yes you can vacuum seal bread!
There’s no denying that fresh bread tastes delicious, but it doesn’t always last long if it’s left out – especially in the Summer months.
Vacuum sealing helps to maintain freshness and is a fabulous way to ensure you’re not wasting a loaf or leftover slices.
Plus, that stored bread can be a lifesaver when you haven’t had time to go to the shop but you need a quick and filling meal (especially for fussy little eaters).
Keep reading for Pac Food’s Bread Vacuum Sealing Guide, outlining the dos and don’ts of vacuum sealing bread and other grains.
How long will vacuum sealed bread last?
Typically, vacuum sealing can keep your food fresher for up to 5 times longer!
The easiest way to preserve any leftover bread is to snap freeze then seal. If your loaf is unsliced, it’s wise to slice before freezing. Freezing beforehand stops it from crumbling during the vacuum sealing process given bread is so soft.
This method means you can still enjoy your favourite loaf for months after it was baked. When you’re ready, simply thaw out or pop straight into the toaster before eating.
If you’ve got one of our domestic sealing machines – the VS 603 – you can also use the pulse function to seal your bread. This method doesn’t require freezing.
You simply control how much air is removed, and stop and seal before the bread is squashed.
Can you vacuum seal cooked rice?
Some grains, such as rice, can be pre-cooked and vacuum sealed to save you time in the kitchen.
For food safety reasons, it is really important to put the cooked grains in the fridge or freezer as soon as they cool down. After the grains are cool they can be portioned out into vacuum bags, sealed, and popped into the freezer.
*EXPERT TIP: Label your vacuum sealing bags with details of its contents and date of sealing.
Uncooked flour, sugar and rice can also be vacuum sealed and kept at room temperature. These items often last between 1 and 2 years once sealed. Without vacuum sealing their normal shelf life is about 6 months.
Can you vacuum seal cooked pasta?
Yes, you can vacuum seal cooked pasta, but it’s best to keep the sauce and pasta separate when storing as they require different amounts of time to thaw or reheat.
When you initially cook the meal, wait for the pasta to cool down before storing and sealing it. [GF4] [GF5]
